HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Skaramangas Shipyards Sign MoU, Establishing a Strategic Partnership for Korean Naval Exports in Greece
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Greek shipbuilder Skaramangas Shipyards have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to cooperate on naval and coast guard vessel programs for the Hellenic Navy and Hellenic Coast Guard.
The agreement was formalized on June 2 at POSIDONIA 2026, the international maritime exhibition held in Athens, marking the first structured collaboration between HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and a European Union-based shipyard for the Greek defense and maritime security market.
The MoU was signed by Kim Jae Rak, Senior Vice President of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, and Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, Chief Executive Officer of Skaramangas Shipyards. The signing ceremony was attended by Greece's Deputy Minister of Maritime Affairs, Stefanos Gikas, and the Republic of Korea's Ambassador to Greece, Ju-seong Lim, both of whom expressed their governments' official support for the initiative.
Varvitsiotis described the partnership as one between "the world's largest shipyard and Greece's largest shipyard, as well as one of the largest in the Mediterranean," noting that the collaboration was achieved only two years after Skaramangas Shipyards resumed full operations. He expressed sincere gratitude to both governments for their support in making the partnership possible.
Building on its proven naval export track record across Asia and South America, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is now making a full-scale entry into the European market. This MoU goes beyond a statement of intent — it represents a concrete step toward establishing a localized delivery model for European customers, with Skaramangas Shipyards serving as the in-country production partner for programs targeting the Hellenic Navy and Hellenic Coast Guard.
